Retirement Planning for Women

A retirement plan that makes room for the life you've built.

Retirement is a transition in how your time, income, and responsibilities fit together. A thoughtful plan begins with your own definition of what comes next.

What questions should retirement planning answer?

When would you like work to become optional? What income would support the life you want? Which expenses may change, and which people might continue to rely on you? What assets and benefits will help fund the transition? These questions can be more useful than beginning with a single retirement number.

At Ellevation, we consider the whole picture: investments, employer and federal benefits where applicable, Social Security, protection, cash reserves, taxes, family priorities, and the legacy you want to create. Planning involves testing assumptions and revisiting them as your life changes.

Turn savings into a workable income strategy

The decisions that helped you accumulate wealth may differ from the decisions needed to spend it. We can examine expected income from pensions, Social Security, retirement accounts, and other sources, then consider how withdrawals and investments might work together.

No retirement-income approach removes every risk. Investment withdrawals can be affected by markets and inflation. Annuities may offer defined guarantees but can involve costs, restrictions, and insurer risk. A comparison should look at income needs, access to assets, survivor outcomes, fees, and the role of each choice in the full plan.

Consider family commitments without overlooking your own future

Some women support children, aging parents, partners, or extended family even while preparing for retirement. Others carry the financial responsibility alone. These situations do not describe every woman, but when they are part of your life they belong in the plan rather than outside it.

We can discuss how much support you want to provide, the resources available, and the boundaries that allow you to remain financially secure. Your goals and obligations should be named clearly enough that tradeoffs can be discussed openly.

Review the decisions that change with time

Retirement timing can affect benefits, health coverage, and the years your portfolio may need to support you. The timing of Social Security benefits can change the monthly amount; the right choice depends on your broader situation. Health needs, longevity, and a possible change in marital status may also affect the plan.

We revisit investment mix, liquidity, beneficiary designations, insurance, and anticipated spending as circumstances evolve. If your benefits include FERS or the TSP, we can consider those alongside your household's other assets and income sources.

Retirement and legacy are part of one conversation

A plan should consider how you want to live while also reflecting what you hope to pass forward. That may involve protecting a spouse or partner, supporting children or grandchildren, charitable giving, or ensuring the right people know where to find important information.

Estate documents require legal counsel, and tax decisions should be reviewed with a qualified tax professional. Ellevation can help coordinate the financial side so that retirement, beneficiaries, insurance, and legacy intentions are considered together.

When is a good time to start?

Planning is valuable years before a retirement date, and it remains valuable after you stop working. Even if the date is uncertain, a first review can identify what is already working, what you need to clarify, and which decisions may become harder to reverse later.

You do not need to arrive with every answer. Bring your questions, your goals, and an honest picture of what you want this next chapter to feel like.

Let's discuss what a well-planned next chapter could look like for you.
